Teaching Metric

Today, my client asked me to introduce my students to the metric system. I used my favorite online tool, Nearpod. to create some unique and clear ways of helping my students understand the units. I began creating this lesson by finding other lessons that went over similar material. After reviewing one from Nearpod, I found that it did not do enough to help my students understand what these units were. So, I created clear slides explaining to my students what a meter, centimeter, millimeter, and kilometer were. I also included objects that I knew they were familiar with to help these students visualize the unit. For example, I know one of my students loves making objects with beads, so I included beads as an example of what 1 mm was. To discover a km, we went to calcmaps.com to find the distances of places we were familiar with and discover what places are 1 km away from there. That way, students can make more connections between the units and their lives.
